Sight fishing shallow grass flats with a fly rod is an undeniably adrenaline-pumping experience. Nothing beats seeing a tailing red, noting where it is headed, and placing a fly perfectly in its path. At the point that you notice that you have gained the fish’s attention, you subconsciously hold your breath, continuing to work the fly. Flexing its body, the redfish bursts towards the fly, slurps it off the surface, and takes off. Fish on!
As a lifetime fisherman, Captain John of 7wt Charters has fished about every way you can. From baiting hand lines with smashed snails as a youngster to tying his own fish-catching flies, Capt. John’s knowledge and expertise ensures that any guest on 7wt Charters is likely in for more “catching” than fishing. As a professional guide offering only fly fishing charter trips, it is clear what type of fishing delivered the most fun for Capt. John.
Whether you are a fly fishing veteran or don’t know the first thing about casting a fly rod, 7wt Charters will tailor the trip and gear to your experience level. Even if it means getting in some practice casts on the sand before heading out, Captain John believes everybody owes it to themselves to catch a fish on a fly in their lifetime.
Anglers on board 7wt Charters can expect to fish the inlets, flats, smaller creeks and bayous from the Narrows of Fort Walton to the mouth of the Choctawhatchee River in Point Washington. These shallow, clear waters are teeming with ideal fly targets including Redfish, Speckled Trout, Bluefish, and Jack Crevalle. A large Jack Crevalle can be a very stubborn fighter on conventional tackle. Catching a big one on a fly is a truly challenging experience.
New for 2019, 7wt Charters now operates a 19’ East Cape Vantage boat. Powered by a 150hp ETEC HO, this vessel will get you to the fish quickly, efficiently, and comfortably. The boat is customized for fly fishing as well, with the addition of a casting platform, leaning post, and trolling motor.
Ready to toss some flies? Book a trip with Captain John and 7wt Charters to experience all that the Santa Rosa Beach area has to offer to fly fishermen!
