Captain Shane Smetak offers fly fishing and light tackle charters in and around Boca Grande, Charlotte harbor, Pine Island, Englewood Venice and Sarasota Florida. He is a full time guide who has fished these areas for over ten years and is passionate about what he does. He welcomes you aboard to sample this fantastic fishery. You will be fishing aboard an 18 ft Maverick HPX18 which is perfect for accessing the extremely shallow water your target fish inhabit. This technical poling skiff allows you to glide silently through the flats and backcountry while your captain will help you perfect your cast. Equipped with a powerful Yamaha engine, GPS, fishfinder and a VHF radio, the boat will get you to the fish without a problem. Captain Shane offers a variety of trips ranging from night trips for Snook and Tarpon to seasonal Bull Red trips and full day Tarpon trips. While he specializes in fly fishing, Captain Shane recognizes that this method of fishing is not for everyone and also supplies light spinning tackle. Boca Grande Flats Fishing is great way to spend the day with family and your favorite fishing buddies. Everything you need for a great day of fishing is provided by Captain Shane; including licenses, rods, reels, tackle, and bait. You’ll want to bring water to stay hydrated, snacks, sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. We’ll have a great fishing trip chasing the Silver King (Tarpon) during the April – July season. We recommend you book in advance as we do book these dates quickly. We’ll also land some Snook or Redfish in the flats; these waters have some of the best grass flats around! You’re sure to hook into something when guided by Captain Shane. Come experience fishing the flats of Boca Grande with Captain Shane. Trips are usually for 2-3 people; depending on if we’re fly fishing or not. We start early as this is when the fish are biting, and trips range from 4-6 hours. Tarpon Half Day
Captain Shane is a GREAT GUIDE!! Not like other guides. He’s a GREAT GUY!!! He strives to give you a great experience!! Most guides give you a character and it seems like there in a hurry to get you off there boat!! And I’ve had a lot of charters!!! We had 2 characters with him 2 days consecutive. He put us on hundreds of tarpon, all trophy fish, mind you, you can’t make the fish bite!! We threw everything at them, every technique, live bait, artificial and we just couldn’t get them to feed, no one out there could!! We watched dozens of boats get around pods of tarpon literally hundreds, no one hooked up!! Shane went out of his way many EXTRA hours on the water to make our experience perfect to hook up on a tarpon!! Unfortunately that never happened!! PLEASE REMEMBER FISHING IS NOT ABOUT CATCHING FISH!! IT’S ABOUT AN EXPERIENCE YOU’LL NEVER FORGET!! Even though we never hooked up on a fish I know that I found a true friend and a man that LOVES what he does and will go out of his way to make your experience truly UNFORGETTABLE!! Fish or no fish!! Night Snook and Tarpon
My sister and I had a blast fishing with Captain Shane! This was our first time fishing for tarpon. We are used to fishing for Northeast species, so he was patient and thorough, to explain the nuances and tricks, and even helped us cast to the perfect spot. He had us on the fish the whole time, and the rest of the time underway we enjoyed great conversation. Tarpon are a tricky fish to land. We have a video of me losing my 2nd one, but I can’t post it here because it’s not rated ‘PG’ 🤣. He really went above and beyond to make sure we had fun, and we definitely did. We are looking forward to booking again with Captain Shane the next time we are in town! If you want to get on the fish, Captain Shane’s experience and knowledge will not disappoint.
