Early in his career, Capt. Dexter Simmons guided an angler to a grand slam during the Hemingway Key West Flats Tournament. There is always a chance to catch that trophy fish or a Flats Grand Slam with Capt. Dexter. Every fly fishing enthusiast who plys the salt waters of the subtropics has this goal in mind. While it is difficult to achieve, it is not impossible, given the right fishing conditions, proper technique and some angler good fortune. Spring, summer and early fall are the best seasons to achieve the slam, although there have been some recorded during the winter months too. Capt. Dexter Simmons has developed the Key West Father-Son Fishing program with emphasis on learning basic to advanced fishing techniques in a fun, friendly setting. Capt. Simmons encourages fathers and sons of all ages to fish with him during school vacations. "I enjoy teaching kids how to fish, and having their father or mother along with them makes it even more of a fun event for everyone." Capt. Dexter Simmons has a degree in elementary and secondary education, and a masters degree in sports and recreation management. He has taught classes at the Florida Keys Community College, has held fly casting seminars for various groups, and teaches fly casting and fly fishing to anglers 250 days a year while guiding the waters around Key West. Capt. Dexter Simmons has written numerous articles about fly fishing on the flats of Key West and the Lower Florida Keys. He has been published in the Fly Fishing magazines and posts a weekly fishing report on numerous web sites as well as his own site. Capt. Dexter Simmons has designed a series of successful Tarpon-Bonefish-Permit fly patterns that have been published in fly fishing magazines and fly fishing books.
