About Fishing in Tybee Island

Tybee Island Fishing Charters

When thinking about Tybee Island, Georgia, the word that comes to mind is smorgasbord. That usually refers to a large amount of food set out for guests in a restaurant, where dozens of choices are offered and the hungry can pick anything and as much as they want. So goes fishing — and just about everything else — on Tybee Island in Georgia. It’s a resort island laid out in a beautiful island setting, but one that you can drive to in a car. Fishing? Well, you can fish off the beach. You can fish off a pier. You can fish off a rock jetty. You can fish in your boat. Or you can take one of dozens of charter boats that take you inland and offshore. And that brings more choices. You can fish in the river, in the marsh, in the bay or in the Atlantic Ocean. You can catch freshwater fish and saltwater fish all within a fairly small area. In other words, when it comes to fishing here, you can get your fill and then some and fish anywhere. Which brings us to a good suggestion: Why not plan a trip and book a charter with FishAnywhere.com to take advantage of all the fishing choices. Wide sandy beaches, peace and quiet and a laid back lifestyle are the trademarks of Tybee, a barrier island and small city just 18 miles from historic downtown Savannah, Ga. The island is a tourist mecca and a great place to fish.

Tybee Island Inshore Fishing

The inside shores and marshes of Tybee Island provide unlimited fishing opportunities. Depending on the time of year, there are redfish and speckled trout plus black drum, flounder, Spanish mackerel and sheepshead. There are two excellent fishing piers that make it easy, or you can go in a big boat or a kayak to explore and fish the waters. The Lazaretto Creek pier, located on old US Hwy. 80 on Lazaretto Creek south of the South channel of the Savannah River is a good spot, as is the Fishermans Walk on Back River located on Tybee Creek south of town. You can also fish right off the beach or one of the rock jetties located on each end of the island. There are also pilings at the pier that attract fish. One of the most popular ways to fish is using a cork and cut bait like squid, shrimp or mullet. Live shrimp and the local “mud” minnows work, as well as small fiddler crabs. Artificials will produce sometimes, but live bait is the favorite. Make sure you consider the tide when fishing inshore here for two reasons. One, it affects the fishing and two, if you go too far up in the marsh and the tide goes out, you’ll be there a while. A maze of rivers like the Savannah, Bull, Wilmington and Ogeechee rivers send fingers out into the marsh that can all produce good fishing for freshwater fish like bass, bream and catfish as well as saltwater species that migrate into the brackish water.

Tybee Island Offshore Fishing

For a small stretch of land, Tybee Island has a multitude of charter choices for anglers. Near the shore, fishing for redfish, or red drum and speckled trout is good and at certain times of year, almost any kind of fish is liable to make a run within a mile or so of shore. Longer runs produce plenty of options for fish as well. Check with your Tybee Island charter captain when booking a trip to discuss the options. There are Spanish and King mackerel, flounder, cobia, red snapper, amberjack, bluefish, black sea bass, white and blue marlin, tarpon and more. Did we mention smorgasbord? There’s also great fishing on the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion which offers all the amenities to make your trip fun and successful. It’s a good spot to warm up your fishing skills before going on your charter trip. It is also handicap accessible.
