About Fishing in Boston

Boston, Massachusetts

Beantown. Fenway Park. Dunkin’ Donuts.,in%20town%22%20for%20coffee%20shops.&text=Dunkin%20is%20popular%20in%20New%20England%20because%20their%20coffee%20is%20amazing.). These things bring to mind one of our favorite cities in America: Boston, Massachusetts. It’s the most populous city in Massachusetts and a favorite New England vacation destination. Tour the city and see a variety of historical landmarks, a number of colleges (including nearby MIT and Harvard), and even the inspiration for 90’s TV show Cheers, Bull & Finch Pub. It’s unlikely you’ll see it all in one day, so plan on spending a few days in Beantown and explore as much as you can. And make sure you add a day or two for fishing. Boston is a waterfront community with plenty of opportunities for dropping some lines. Freshwater and saltwater fishing grounds are nearby, including the Charles River and Atlantic Ocean. Even if you visit during the winter months, you can bet your bottom dollar there’s good fishing in the harbor!

Fishing Near Boston

Ask a local to say “Boston Harbor” and they just may oblige you. Sometimes we like to show off and give you a solid “Paak the caa in Haavaad Yard” - but only if you’re laughing with us and not at us. When it comes to fishing the harbor, we can help you out there too. Striped bass are the most sought-after fish in the area. They can grow to as large as 60 pounds, and are found in good numbers from May to October. Most anglers will opt for trolling for stripers, or try their hand at fishing near the reefs with live or cut bait or artificials. Other fish waiting for you in the harbor include bluefish, black sea bass, scup, weakfish, tautog, mackerel, or flounder (or fluke). Off the coast of Boston are islands, cuts, and smaller bays that anglers can enjoy nearshore fishing. One such spot is Hull Gut, near Peddocks Island. It’s a cut between the islands that is a great spot for new or young anglers looking to have a great first time experience. Fish this area for striped bass, bluefish, and more. If you’re looking for some freshwater fishing options near Boston, check out the Charles River. It runs a winding 80 miles throughout the state of Massachusetts from Hopkinton to Boston. It’s the river you see when Fenway Park is shown. Or during any movie or TV show that’s set in Boston with rowers gliding through the water. Yep… that river. While fishing may not be the first thing that comes to mind, we encourage you not to overlook these fishing grounds. There’s quality fishing found here exactly because people underestimate its opportunities. Head downriver from the Watertown Dam and you’ll find good spots to fish for crappie, catfish, and more. Another spot that many anglers visit when fishing in Boston is Jamaica Pond, a 68-acre freshwater pond in the neighborhood of Jamaica Plain. This body of water is stocked yearly with largemouth bass, trout, and sunfish. For outdoor enthusiasts looking for a reprieve from the city, this is the perfect spot. There’s a 1.5 mile path around the pond for walking or running, and water activity includes boating as well as fishing. There is no swimming in this pond.

Boston Deep Sea Fishing

If your group wants a little deep sea action, you’re in luck. The local Boston fishing charters are equipped with everything you need for a successful day of deep sea fishing. The Massachusetts Bay is an inlet of the greater Atlantic Ocean, along with nearby Cape Cod Bay. Both offer reefs and wrecks that are home to a variety of fish. Plan to spend at least six hours on a charter, and you’re sure to see some bent rods. Tuna, haddock, halibut, and even sharks are often seen on Boston offshore fishing trips. Shark fishing is actually quite popular in New England. A favorite fishing spot is Wildcat Knoll. Here anglers can catch Mako, Thresher, or Blue sharks. You’ll want to use heavy tackle to reel the monster in, and of course watch out for those chompers. It’s a legendary fishing trip when you catch a shark! Another favorite for Boston offshore charters is tuna. Bluefin tuna can grow as big as 1,000 pounds and are frequently caught in Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod Bay. Again, heavy tackle is needed for this species. When you hire a local fishing captain, they will have all the gear required, along with a first mate who will help in all aspects of the trip. Schedule your next bluefin tuna fishing charter anytime from June to October for best results.
