About Fishing in Biscayne Bay

Biscayne Bay Fishing Charters

At 35 miles long and up to eight miles across, Biscayne Bay just south of Miami is big. Biscayne Bay starts the north end of the Florida Keys. The bay is also full of fish. A Biscayne Bay fishing charter can help navigate these waters and put you on these fish to create memories that last a lifetime. Biscayne Bay is most famous for snook, snapper and jacks. It also has tarpon, shark, barracuda and some grouper. When the mullet run begins, usually in October, bigger tarpon move in to capitalize on the food source. By far the best bait to use in the bay comes right from the bay. Pilchards are common, and easily caught with a cast net. Mutton snapper and snook, pronounced like look, cannot turn down a pilchard. Biscayne Bay fishing charter guides will usually load up a live well of fresh bait on the way out for a day of chasing fish. A lot of people prefer to fish the southern end of the bay, which has flats with bonefish, permit and tarpon and plenty of mangroves. Don't overlook the north end. "However, the numerous grass beds, canals, docks and bridges within North Bay abound with tarpon, snook, mangrove snapper and seatrout. Many people don't think great fishing exists near such a heavily populated area. Those who fish here, including myself, know better," says George Povermo at ESPN.com. As the bay ranges in depth from a foot or so several feet deep, a lot of the angling is sight fishing. This is a big advantage for fly fishermen as they can target feeding fish easily. Top flies are shrimp and crab pattern with assorted largemouth bass flies showing respectable results. These shallow waters also mean the ability for stalking fish is excellent. You can do this from a kayak, on foot, or from the front of the boat while your guide poles through the shallows. With a bit of luck, you can come across a school of snook and chum them with chopped pilchards or something else. The bite will be fast and furious until they wise up and move on. Chumming also works to catch baitfish. Open a can of cat food and spoon some over the side. Baitfish will come to eat and you can catch all you need. The giant lagoon encompasses Biscayne Bay National Park, which allows fishing per Florida regulations.

Biscayne Bay Inshore and Nearshore Fishing

The way Biscayne Bay is laid out, inshore and nearshore fishing are much the same thing. The bay is dotted with artificial and natural reefs. Some of the reefs are sunken boats and ships; the fish don't care. This bottom structure holds the above-mentioned snapper, grouper, 'cudas and jacks. Live and cut bait fished near the bottom is your best bet for most of these fish. Pilchards, again, are an excellent choice and since you catch them in the bay, you save money on bait. Spanish mackerel cruise in and out of the bay looking for something to eat. These fish rarely stay in one place. Seabirds dive-bombing the water are a definite indicator that something is driving baitfish to surface. Cast silver spoons, bright jigs or are minnow-pattern flies into the feeding frenzy and hang on. As the bay is fairly shallow across most of the expanse, spearfishing is also excellent. Some Bisycane Bay Charters specialize in spearfishing charters both snorkeling and scuba diving. If you book a spearfishing trip, ask about going after the lionfish. With no bag limits and an open season, you can pack out as many as you can stand. WARNING! These fish have venomous spines and getting tagged by one can put you in excruciating pain for a while. Best to let your guide fillet them. Closer to shore, especially on the south end, the mangroves are home to some monster snook. Jigs, topwater plugs and live bait are excellent choices.

Biscayne Bay Offshore Fishing

Head out to the blue water to find the big fish. Offshore reefs and drop-offs are magnets for sailfish, dolphin, marlin, tuna, king mackerel and wahoo near and at the surface. These fish cruise constantly looking for baitfish. Trolling is a good way to locate them. Top rigs are dusters tipped with a ballyhoo or cigar minnow and squid rigs. The squid rigs can ride on the surface or be hooked to a downrigger to troll deep. Deep trolling can also draw strikes from amberjacks, grouper and snapper. Your best shot at landing one of these reef fish is to find a honey hole and drop live or fresh bait right over the side.
