Orange Beach, Alabama is one of the best places in the state to visit. It’s on the beach, it’s surrounded by water, and the fishing is out of this world. It probably has something to do with all that water. Located at the very east tip of Alabama, Orange Beach is neighbors with the state of Florida to the east and the city of Gulf Shores to the west. In fact, the city is often paired with Gulf Shores; Alabama’s other top vacation destination. The two share over 30 miles of sugar-white, sandy beaches where locals and visitors alike will play, sunbathe, and fish. Overall, Orange Beach is a great place to visit with lots of things to do to keep everyone busy. If you are going to do one touristy thing while visiting Orange Beach, make sure it’s visiting The Wharf. This popular entertainment destination has restaurants, bars, shops, and more. It’s located on the northside of the city, just off Portage Creek. Visiting The Wharf will be a highlight of your trip and is a great option for any non-anglers in the group. For the anglers visiting Orange Beach, get ready for a few days filled with the best fishing around. Remember all that water we mentioned? The entire city of Orange Beach is essentially surrounded by water: Portage Creek, Wolf Bay, and Bay La Launch to the north, Perdido Bay and Bayou Saint John to the west separating Florida and Alabama, and of course the bountiful Gulf of Mexico to the south. There’s no limit to your fishing adventures in Orange Beach.
Inshore charters have the choice of fishing the northern bays or the Gulf of Mexico. Usually it depends on the time of year and the weather report for the gulf. If there are high seas in the gulf your charter can redirect to the bay where the water is much calmer. No matter which side of the peninsula you’re fishing, get ready to catch redfish, speckled trout, flounder, blackdrum, catfish, pompano, sheepshead, bluefish, ladyfish, and tripletail just to name a few. Speckled Trout, otherwise known as spotted seatrout, is a great inshore catch. Identified by their silver coloring and black dots along the back, they are found throughout the entire year in Orange Beach. Your charter captain will head towards the mouths of the rivers where the grassbeds are thick. Cast a live shrimp or crab and drift along the bottom; use a popping cork to attract the trout and let them know dinner is ready. For a larger, gator trout catch, consider a larger bait offering. Redfish is another consistent bite when fishing Orange Beach. That’s because the area between the bay and the gulf is a top spawning zone. Bull reds are consistently caught in this area, especially during the end of the year (October to December) when reds are moving through the pass. Redfish, also known as red drum, are a bronze/tan color with a distinct black dot at the beginning of the tail. Fish with a variety of live crustacean baits (such as shrimp or crab) or artificial lures for a successful trip.
If offshore is more your speed, the Gulf of Mexico offers fantastic fishing grounds for Orange Beach charters. Whether you’re looking for a reef adventure to catch snapper, or a deep sea charter to catch mahi mahi, wahoo, tuna, or marlin, Orange Beach captains can get you on the action. Red Snapper is very popular along the Gulf Coast, and Orange Beach is no exception. There are fantastic reefs close to the shore and you won’t have to go far to find the schools of snapper, grouper, and more. Snapper enjoy hiding out in the many holes and caves the reef creates; they are a predator fish that will ambush their prey. Your goal is to make the bait or lure appear like a tasty treat, then reel in your trophy as soon you feel it strike. Red Snapper season is typically in the summer; if you happen to make a catch outside of season just take a quick photo before releasing back to the gulf. If your charter is more than four hours long you will be able to cruise to the deeper parts of the Gulf for some pelagic species. Mahi Mahi, tuna, and marlin are just a few examples of what can be caught here. One of the best Orange Beach offshore adventures is the search for marlin. Marlin are part of the billfish family, and in the area you can find blue marlin and white marlin. This marlin fishery is very popular near Orange Beach, there’s even a yearly fishing tournament specifically for billfish!
