The speed of the boat is an important factor to trolling; too fast and the fish will miss the bait, too slow and they’re simply not interested. Keep in mind, there are regulations in place to help the conservation efforts of the species. Certain times of the year striped bass is catch-and-release, with other times there’s a bag and size limit in place. In the month of April and certain dates in August there is absolutely no targeting of the species. Make sure to check the calendar and be compliant with all regulations for the health and wellness of this incredible species. Another popular species of Chesapeake Bay, especially during the summer months, is cobia. As the weather warms up, that’s when cobia move in from the ocean. They are an odd-looking fish with a compressed head and black or gray coloring on the top with white bellies. They can grow up to 50 pounds or more, and use their size to fight when hooked. Cobia are also notorious for thrashing up the boat deck and everything on it if landed “green,” when the fish has not tired itself out from the fight. Other species found throughout the bay include redfish, speckled trout, flounder, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, tarpon, sheepshead, bluefish, black seabass, and much more. Fishing is good twelve months of the year, and you’re sure to have a great day of fishing when launching from Deale.
