About Fishing in Oneida Lake

Oneida Lake, New York

With a surface area of almost 80 miles, Oneida Lake is the largest lake in New York that is located entirely within the state. It’s a relatively shallow natural lake that has an average depth of around 20 feet. On the map it appears small, but that’s because it is so close to the great lakes, including massive Lake Ontario. In fact, it feeds the Oneida River, which is a tributary of the Oswego River and flows directly into Lake Ontario. The lake has 80 miles of shoreline and is about 20 miles long. It does have water up to 50 feet deep in spots, but also has many shoals and shallows that can challenge boaters. But the lake is big enough to be a hotspot for fishing, outdoor recreation and just plain having fun and relaxing. It is a short drive to the northeast from Syracuse. On pretty, warm days the lake is bursting with fishing boats, sailing, swimming, beachgoers and more. It’s become pretty popular on the professional bass fishing tours, too. But it isn’t always an easy place to fish because of its numerous shallow areas that produce some mighty big waves when the wind is blowing. This beautiful lake is named after the native Oneida Nation, part of the Iroquois Tribe. It’s often referred to locally as “Tsioqui”, meaning white water, which refers back to those waves we just mentioned. But the name should sound familiar to most Americans that eat at the table, too. Oneida Limited is a very popular American manufacturer and distributor of stainless steel and silver plated cutlery and tableware used both in homes and in restaurants.

Fishing Oneida Lake

Oneida Limited’s advertising slogan, “Make the Presentation as Memorable as the Meal,” can also translate to fishing, where you want to make the trip itself as much fun as eating your catch! And on Oneida, there is plenty of that. Livewells full of fish like yellow perch and both smallmouth and largemouth bass are caught here each year. You can also land walleye, chain pickerel, northern pike, tiger musky, bluegill, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, black crappie, freshwater drum, common carp, bowfin and lake sturgeon, Spring fishing is fantastic for yellow perch, when thousands of the fish move into the weedy flats and along the creeks. They can be caught with jigs, minnows or worms, or a combination of both. Drifting the weedline is popular for landing them. Bass fishing really gets going in the summer when the lakes baitfish start to grow bigger and bass begin to warm up to feeding again. Shallow weedy areas are good for bass, too, especially largemouth. The smallmouth are mostly found in deeper waters, but they stay around wherever the balls of shad and baitfish are. Even winter doesn’t stop the fishing here. Once the lake freezes over, it’s a hotspot for family outings aimed at having fun and bringing home filets for supper. Crappie and bluegill can be caught here during that period and the best time is usually when the lake first freezes and near spring just before the ice begins to melt.
