Holden Beach is one of five islands that are a part of the Brunswick Islands. It’s located near the southern end of North Carolina, equal distance from Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC. Holden Beach is known as one of the best family beaches in the country, and offers a place to relax and enjoy the laid-back vibe. It’s a great place to vacation, and even better when you reside here all year long. Families who enjoy adventures will also appreciate Holden Beach. The fishing in the area is one of the biggest draws. Did we mention it’s an island? There’s the Intracoastal Waterway to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south (Holden Beach is on the bend of North Carolina). Kayaking is another popular activity here. Some will even combine the two and practice kayak fishing. If you’ve never experienced this particular excursion, it’s great for those who love activity and getting up close to the action. Visiting in October will get you the opportunity to attend the Festival By The Sea, a two-day annual arts and crafts festival that kicks off with a parade. Other times of the year are still filled with excitement and activities for the whole family. Holden Beach Inshore Fishing

The quickest way to get your rod bending is to fish right from the shores of Holden Beach. On the Atlantic side of the island, this means either surf fishing, or fishing from Holden Beach Pier. If you’re surf fishing, watch out for swimmers and surfers. Usually if you go early in the morning or later in the afternoon (those “golden hours” of the day) you won’t get much competition. Fishing from the surf will gain anglers whiting, mullet, croaker, and more. Depending on your rig, you could also hook a shark! Holden Beach Pier gets anglers past the breaking waves as it stretches 700-feet over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s one of those old-fashioned wooden piers with tons of character. There is a fee to access the pier, even if you’re just taking in the view. Anglers can purchase day or seasonal passes, and won’t need a fishing license if fishing from the pier (but you will need one when surf fishing). There’s also a pier house to grab snacks and drinks for your day of fishing. When fishing the pier, expect to reel in a variety of fish, including trout, flounder, mullet, ladyfish, sheepshead, and sharks, depending on the season. Anglers who fish the Intracoastal Waterway will also see a variety of inshore species, such as redfish (also known as red drum), speckled seatrout (known locally as “specks”), flounder, and sheepshead. The Intracoastal Waterway is dependent on the tides (just like the ocean) so when you fish is just as important as where you fish. If you’re fishing with first-time or young anglers, consider fishing under the highway overpass. Oyster beds collect here with sheepshead feeding nearby. Offer a small crustacean (shrimp or crab) near the pilings of the overpass and a sheepshead will no doubt take the bait. They are an easier fish to catch and great for those new anglers to get hooked on the sport!

Holden Beach Offshore Fishing

North Carolina offshore fishing has earned the reputation of the best in the world for sportfishermen and women. If you’re fishing in the winter months, you can try your hand at reeling in a monster tuna. Summer months are open season for kingfish and billfish such as marlins and sailfish. No matter when you’re visiting Holden Beach, there’s an offshore charter ready for your group. Although we do recommend booking early, as captains in the area fill their schedules quickly (especially in the summer). Ask your captain about fishing near the Frying Pan Tower. This is a USCG Light Station located 34 miles off the coast, and has a number of shipwrecks nearby. And the fishing is fantastic! Everything from grouper (and other bottom dwellers) to mahi mahi (and other fast-running pelagic fish). This area has it all! Plan on some sore arms after fighting the monsters of the tower!
