The locals salvaged the rum, hid it out in the dunes and when they drank it proclaimed “it’s strong enough to kill the devil”. A less glamorous possibility is that the town was somewhat misnamed for the large number of killdeer shore birds. The name “Killdeer Hills” somehow emerged as Kill Devil Hills. Regardless of all that, this town is a well-known seaside attraction and is also famous for one other thing. Kill Devil Hills is the most heavily populated settlement along the Outer Banks, and even at that, it has only around 8,000 residents. It’s the unofficial site of the Wright Brothers first airplane flight back in 1903. The town hosts the Wright Brothers National Memorial, although the actual flight took place several miles north in the community of Kitty Hawk. While you are here, you’ll also want to visit the Jockey’s Ridge State Park right down the road. It’s the tallest natural sand dune system in the eastern United States. There are also lots of good places to eat fresh seafood and enjoy the bounty of the nearby waters.

Kill Devil Hills Inshore Fishing

There is only one thing that seasoned anglers need to hear to let them know that Kill Devil Hills is a good spot to go fishing: Albemarle Sound. It’s by far one of the top inland fisheries along the North Carolina coast. Fed by the Pasquoank and North Rivers, the Albemarle Sound is the mother lode of fishing in the area. Off the sound, there are also fantastic fishing holes in Kitty Hawk Bay, Roanoke Sound, Croatan Sound, the East Lake area and the Alligator River. All are easily accessible from the shores of Kill Devil Hills. The catch of the day usually includes speckled trout, flounder and redfish, plus a whole variety of other fish. You can start your offshore fishing adventure right here from the sandy shores of the Kill Devil Hills beaches. All the beaches are open to surf fishing, but there are some regulations. One of those regulations is that you can not cast in an area where people are swimming or surfing. Lifeguard beaches here are pretty crowded, so if you want to fish one of them, go early or late in the day. Then there is the Avalon pier. The 700-foot long pier has been a mainstay of the area’s fishermen since 1958 and there is everything you need right there on the pier to have a good day fishing. You can catch everything from flounder, trout, mullet, blues, croakers, even Spanish mackerel and pompano and when they are running. Fish far enough on the pier and you could also see big fish like kingfish and cobia. Like most shallow water bites around the coast, the best times to go fishing are the first and last 30 minutes of the day. Water on the far end of the pier is 15 feet deep, so some pretty good fish swim that path.
