About Fishing in North Myrtle Beach

North Myrtle Beach Fishing Charters

Looking out over the vast waters of the Atlantic Ocean can be a bit overwhelming. There is water as far as you can see, but you don’t have to look that far to find great fishing inshore or offshore at this popular resort area on the South Carolina Coast. In fact, don’t be a bit surprised if your North Myrtle Beach fishing trip here has you dancing the Shag! In case you don’t know, the “Shag” is a beach dance which was born right here in this area and eventually became the official state dance of the state. It’s a partner dance done to popular face paced beach music that gets your blood pumping just watching. Kind of like fishing here. The Shag has been described as a “cold beer on a warm night with a hot date and no plans for tomorrow”. That’s the way a couple of charter fishing trips in this vacation wonderland will leave you feeling. North Myrtle Beach is a nine-mile long community just north of the popular Myrtle Beach area. North Myrtle Beach is basically made up of Cherry Grove, Windy Hill, Ocean Drive and Crescent Beach. They personify the ocean-front life that makes the whole coast so popular. Fishing in this area offers the best of two worlds. Inshore, there are rivers, small creeks, grass lined marshes and areas you can fish from the bank, a big boat or even a kayak. The ocean offers a variety of fishing on the other side. Deeper water, bigger fish and trips as close as 10 miles or as far as 100 miles offshore all produce good catches. The key is knowing what you are doing and where you are going. And there’s no better way to do that than with an experienced North Myrtle Beach charter captain.

North Myrtle Beach Inshore Fishing

If you look at a map of the North Myrtle Beach area, you don’t see a lot of blue — water — on the map. But even though the big inland lakes and bays that are found in some places don’t exist here, a whole other world of inshore fishing does. Options include some small lakes, like Long Pond, where you can catch fish including largemouth and smallmouth bass and all kinds of perch. There’s also the Chapin Pond and Dunes Lake, which offer white perch, largemouth bass and all kinds of bream for anglers. These are also popular with fly fishermen in the area. But the larger options are waters like the Intracoastal Waterway, an area that is busy with ship and boat traffic, but also has some fishing options for anglers. In fact, while it doesn’t have all the natural beauty of most of this area, you can find brackish areas where you might catch anything from redfish, catfish, largemouth bass, catfish or crappie. Nearer saltwater spots, there are even red and black drum, flounder and sea bass. Kayak fishing is growing by leaps and bounds in popularity and fishing from the small paddle boats puts you in some fantastic fishing for freshwater or saltwater species, depending on time of the year. The Waccamaw River is a top spot. There are even charter trips and guided trips for kayak fishing in this area. Check them out. There are also some fantastic pier fishing adventures to take on while spending a few days in North Myrtle Beach. The Cherry Grove Pier is almost 1,000 feet long and is a landmark in the area.

North Myrtle Beach Offshore Fishing

This is a great spot to go offshore. The beach is pretty, but the fishing is awesome. Charter boats leave here and go all up and down the coast to wherever the fish are biting. You can take a half-day trip for just a few hours all the way up to a multi-day long adventure going out further for bigger fish. What anglers have awaiting their casts offshore include bluefish, pompano, flounder, mackerel, marlin, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, and shark to name a few. A good charter captain can hook you up with a trip to target the fish that are biting the best and he’ll take you right to them.
