About Fishing in Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral Fishing Charters

Less famous than the place just to the north, Port Canaveral is a fishing destination for those in the know. Located on the Banana River between Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, this Atlantic coast fishing destination is the place to go to catch vermillion and lane snapper. The vermillion and lane are often confused with the red snapper by people who are not very familiar with the two species. The vermillion and the lane are smaller than their more famous cousin. The vermillion especially can be identified as a different fish by the huge eye it has, much bigger than on other species of snapper. The Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) links above have pictures and description so you can tell exactly which fish you have caught. Reef snappers, like the red, vermillion and lane, are regulated by Florida and the federal government. Who has jurisdiction depends on where the fish is caught. Port Canaveral fishing charters guides know both sets of regulations and know where each jurisdiction begins and ends. For the vermilion, you are allowed 10 fish per person per day. If you catch more than one species of reef fresh, you can have up to 20 of the mixed bag. You are still allowed only 10 vermillion snapper. The state rules change for the lane snapper. This fish, even smaller than the vermillion, has a 100-pound daily bag limit. It takes a lot of fish to hit 100 pounds. On the federal side, you can have up to 20 lane snappers per angler. Why are the vermillion and lane not a target fish for snapper anglers? Good question. "Lane Snapper has delicate flesh with a delicate flavor. The flesh is near white with darker areas just under the skin, but these do not have a strong taste. It is flavorful enough to interest fish lovers but not so strong as to deeply offend those who prefer their fish white and bland. Use delicate sauces so as not to overwhelm the flavor," says Clove Garden. The website 30A ranks the snapper family in the four best eating fish from Florida. If you are after these fish, think structure and smaller hooks. A 5/0 is as big as you need and in some cases may be too big. Size your bait appropriately too. These fish don't get to be the size of their cousins, so big offerings will not get a hookup. Your best bet is pieces of squid and cut bait fished on or near the bottom. The deeper you get, the more weight you'll need to get your bait right to the bottom and hold it there. Make sure whatever reel you use has enough line to reach the bottom as well. Unlike some fish, you don't have to be exactly on target. Snapper move around so if you are just off the structure at the bottom, you are still likely to catch fish.

Port Canaveral Offshore Fishing

While you are out there in the blue water, you can try to catch some of the other deepwater fish that also lurk here. Big sharks and sailfish call this region home and hunting grounds. The Gulf Stream, sometimes called the world's biggest river, sweeps by. This warmer current is a major highway for all kinds of fish and the prey they eat. Going after shark means live or cut bait. Sailfish are most often caught trolling silver lures, squid rigs or ballyhoo. You can also catch marlin, mahi mahi, barracuda, wahoo, king mackerel and tuna trolling through these waters. If trolling is not your thing, then ask Port Canaveral fishing charters about the grouper, hogfish and amberjack that also frequent these waters. All the guides have honey holes where they expect to catch something . Live and frozen baits dropped to bottom on a fluorocarbon leader will connect if the fish are around.

Port Canaveral Inshore Fishing

It is hard to beat the inshore fishing on the Banana River. Tarpon, Spanish mackerel and mutton snapper are common. During certain times of the year, bull reds come into the shallows to breed. When that happens, you can expect to take some pictures and stories of redfish nearly as big as your leg. Your guide, who brings all the fishing gear you need, will tell you what the best bait or lure for the day is. That will change with the water temperature and clarity.
