About Fishing in Siesta Key

Siesta Key Fishing Charters

If you’re looking for a great vacation spot with miles of pristine beaches and some of the best fishing on Florida’s gorgeous West coast, then put Siesta Key at the top of your list. Siesta Key is a barrier island that lies just across the bay from the beautiful city of Sarasota, and it offers plenty of things to do for all ages and activity levels. You never have to leave the island because everything you need for a fun-filled vacation is within easy reach. There are world class restaurants, many shops and boutiques, grocery stores, and rental shops that cater to every type of vacationer. Rent a bike or scooter and explore by land, or grab a jet ski or kayak and take to the water. Siesta Key has it all. Novice and expert anglers from all over the world come to Siesta Key with the hopes of a rod-bending adventure and memories that will last a lifetime, and no one leaves disappointed. Depending on the time of year you’ll be visiting, you’ll have your choice of many different species. Something’s always biting in Siesta Key!

Siesta Key Inshore Fishing

If inshore predators like redfish or snook get your blood pumping, Siesta Key has you covered. These hard-fighting bruisers can test the tackle and skill of any angler, and their eagerness to bite and fight make them plenty of fun for inshore fishermen. Other species, such as speckled trout, ladyfish, grouper, drum, snapper, and jack crevalle are all eager to take the bait and give you a tough battle. Inshore trips are a great way to get the whole family on the water, and are perfect for introducing kids to fishing. The cooperative nature of inshore fish, combined with calm waters and an experienced charter captain, will ensure that all members of your party come back to the dock with smiles on their faces and, if you so desire, a cooler full of fish. Sarasota Bay is dotted with islands that help break up the wind, so there’s always a place to find shelter and biting fish. Charter boats are familiar with all the areas that will give you the most enjoyment from your day on the water, and can adapt to almost any weather conditions to make every aspect of the trip enjoyable.

Siesta Key Offshore Fishing

If offshore fishing is more your style, Siesta Key also has plenty of options. Out on the blue water you’re apt to run into species such as cobia, mahi-mahi, barracuda, grouper, and a variety of sharks, just to name a few. It’s a different style of fishing out on the open ocean, and your captain may employ a number of different techniques, including trolling with downriggers, fishing with live or cut bait, or putting a bait right on the bottom to attract a prize of the deep, the mighty grouper. Offshore fishing hotspots include a wide array of underwater formations that attract all kinds of fish. You may find a favorite reef, wreck, or tower that has produced fish in the past. There are thousands of submerged pieces of structure that are either natural or artificial, and the fish love to congregate in these areas. If you’re really adventurous, you may find the fish of your dreams even further offshore. The Gulf Stream originates in the Gulf of Mexico and flows downward to the Florida Keys, and then heads up north parallel to the East coast of the United States. It acts as a huge underwater river with a wide temperature variant. For instance, it’s not uncommon for the surface temperature to be 75 degrees, while a couple thousand feet below, the temperature can be as low as 45 degrees. The Gulf Stream can be 40 to 50 miles wide, and its fast moving current can attract a wide variety of gamefish, such as white and blue marlin, mako sharks, sailfish, and blackfin tuna. This is not a place for small boats and amateur captains, however. Small boats that get caught in the current can find themselves miles and miles from their intended destination. It’s best to travel with an experienced charter boat if catching a hard-fighting offshore fish is on your bucket list.
