About Fishing in East Bay

East Bay Fishing Charters

East Bay is part of a three-section giant bay south and east of Houston and just north of Galveston. The other two parts are Trinity Bay and Galveston Bay. East Bay is the eastern part and butts up against Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. Just a short drive from Houston and Galveston, East Bay has easy access to both metro areas and the attractions there. The Bolivar Peninsula, now an island thanks to the Rollover Pass to the east and north, offers miles of beaches for the sun worshippers. Chambers County says you can find plenty to do, including golf and a raceway. If you time it right, several festivals like Wine to Win, the Texas Gator Fest and the Texas Rice Festival are great fun. Fishing here ranges from very good to perfect depending on the weather, time of year and the fish you are chasing.

East Bay Inshore Fishing

East Bay is home to thriving oyster beds, which translates directly into redfish and trout. Both fish are found over the beds at high tide and working the edges at low tide. The big difference is the reds will run in larger schools. When you find the reds, which are almost always in feeding mode, with care you can catch several to many before the school moves on. The south side of East Bay, along the barrier islands, is full of tidal creeks. Redfish love to hang out here and will be in the creeks as long as they have enough water to swim. Reds are also found in more open water on the flats. Trout are more common here. Look for grass patches for both species.

East Bay Nearshore Fishing

Around on the Gulf of Mexico side of Bolivar Peninsula, the pristine sand beaches hold more delights than just splashing in the surf. Black drum, sharks, whiting, giant bull reds, and trout are found in these waters. You can fish from the beach or get further out in a boat. Live and cut bait are the top choices. Fortunately, all the bait you need is right at hand. Wade in with a cast net to get shrimp, squid, minnows and other small baits. Sand fleas, mole crabs that do not bite people, are right at the surf’s edge and make excellent bait for everything in the surf line. If you want something bigger, step up to whole fish or large cut bait. When fishing in the surf, the best rig is a three-way swivel. The pyramid sinker will not roll around in the current, keeping your bait in a confined area. The bait will move around, but that just gives it a natural appearance.

East Bay Offshore Fishing

Head into the deeper waters with East Bay fishing charters to find big reef fish like amberjack, grouper, snapper, barracuda, and more and bigger sharks. Live bait is still king. Just like nearshore fishing, you can catch the bait you need on the same reef you’ll fish over. A Sabiki rig can fill a livewell in a hurry. If live bait is not your thing or you prefer more of a challenge, offshore jigging will see how tough you really are. These big jigs are dropped to the bottom and worked up to the surface in rapid, strong jerks. Other offshore fish like blackfin and yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi, mackerel and wahoo are out there, but you have to spend a little time looking for them. Your captain will troll rigs at the surface, mid-depth and close to the bottom to find fish. The captain also keeps an eye on the sky for birds diving to the surface. That means something has chased baitfish from the depths. Troll by to see what is biting and then switch to big bucktail jigs and cast. For best results, tip the jig with a cigar minnow. When the shrimp boats pull its nets, that is as close to a guarantee as you’ll get anywhere when fishing. Big schools of all kinds of fish swarm the waters around the shrimper waiting for the bycatch to cover the side. The pickings just do not get any easier than alongside the commercial boat.
