About Fishing in Freeport

Freeport Fishing Charters

The Texas Gulf Coast is lined with communities, large and small, that offer almost anything related to vacations and the outdoor world. There are beaches, historical attractions, activities and all kinds of accommodations. And, of course, there’s fishing. When it comes to one of these popular spots, fishing isn’t just a thing to do, it’s the thing to do. Chasing fish takes up the top three spots on the list of things to do. At Freeport, Texas, located in Brazoria County, it’s fishing, fishing and then more fishing. Located almost in the middle of two of the most popular larger areas, Galveston Bay and Matagorda, Freeport can often be overlooked. But once you’ve wet a hook there, you will know. There are no huge bays or estuary systems like some of the coastal towns, but the inshore and offshore fishing out of these areas can’t be overlooked. It's also a bustling commercial area, a deepwater port called “Brazosport”. But industry and the outdoors co-exist well here. One of the world’s largest shrimp trawler fleets calls this area home. With all those shrimp nearby, you know there are fish nearby. And the diversity is very interesting. You might see a sea-going oil tanker and a group of kayaks skimming through the same water at any time. Inshore, it’s redfish, speckled trout, flounder and a few other species migrating in and out around the mouth of the massive Brazos River that flows more than 1,200 miles through Texas, making it the 11th longest river in the United States. Along the river there are nineteen major reservoirs, offering lots of freshwater fishing. But as the river enters Brazoria County and nears the Gulf, the waters are known for brackish and saltwater fishing. Don’t miss the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge either. It’s a fantastic day trip for studying the diversity of coastal wildlife in Texas.

Freeport Inshore Fishing

The best way to catch a big bunch of redfish, speckled trout or flounder is in a boat, where you can make sure you are getting to the fish. The numerous bays, bayous and backwater lakes around Freeport offer some easy fishing without long runs. That leaves you more time for fishing. At certain times of the year, you can add white trout, sheepshead, and black drum to your catch. Freeport is a great family fishing spot because there is fishing by boat, or you can also fish right from the shore. There are numerous jetties and fishing piers that offer plenty of fishing in addition to your charter trip. In fact, the number of jetties here is probably one of the reasons Freeport is such a hotspot for fishing. It’s fish structure extraordinaire! One of the hotspots of this region is the Crystal River and its numerous tributaries. There are numerous grass flats that hold the fish we’ve already mentioned, plus snook, spotted mackerel and on occasion, cobia. Two spots you won’t want to miss are the Surfside Jetty Park and the Quintana Park. Surfside is a 15-acre park with a beach, easy access to fishing jetties and every kind of outdoor activity you can imagine. Quintana is a bigger area, covering 52 acres that also includes overnight facilities. It too is a great spot to beach or jetty fish, or just enjoy Mother Nature at her best.

Freeport Offshore Fishing

Here’s the real prize of Freeport fishing. It’s a short run off the Freeport shore to get to some of the best deep water fishing that Texas has to offer. There are numerous species including big targets like dolphin, wahoo and blackfin tuna at certain times of the year. But then there is the regular menu of popular sportsfish such as red, lane, mangrove and Vermillion snapper plus grouper, cobia, amberjack and kingfish. Because of the proximity to good fishing offshore, half-day trips are popular here, but you can go for as long as you want. Do a little research and find a charter trip that fits your needs in terms of length of trip or species you are targeting. Fishing is good all year around.
