About Fishing in Riviera Beach

Riviera Beach Fishing Charters

Located on a point where four saltwater bays come together, Riviera Beach, TX, and nearby Riviera were carved out of the King Ranch in 1907 to be a resort area. Theodore Koch named the place for the French Riviera. Riviera Beach is about an hour south of Corpus Christi. Things went well until the hurricane of 1916 that flattened everything. The community did rebuild, but it’s not what it once was. Today the small community is a fishing village with a few vacation homes and a few hundred full-time residents. The lack of development and the outstanding fishing make Riviera Beach an ideal place to get away from the world for a while. Fishing out of Riviera Beach is almost exclusively inshore. Padre Island to the east is a long barrier separating Riviera Beach from the Gulf of Mexico. A long boat ride from Riviera Beach gets you to the Gulf. The nearest passes are Packery Channel to the north and Port Mansfield Channel to the south. The nearest road access to Padre Island is at Flour Bluff to the north. The four bays clockwise from the northwest are: Cayo del Grullo, Alazan Bay, Baffin Bay (that is the entrance to Laguna Madre) and Laguna Salada. Baffin is the largest in terms of open water. Alazan comes close to being that big once the tidal creeks and Petronilla Creek are included. Cayo del Grullo is next, while Laguna Salada is the smallest and also has the smallest creek.

Fishing Riviera Beach

Depending on the time of year, reds are either the No. 1 or No. 2 fish for Riviera Beach fishing charters. The redfish bite slows down a bit during winter, but remains a good fishery. Top redfish tactics depend on what you are after. If you want schooling reds under 10 pounds, look to the creeks. Live and cut bait are king with shrimp and the various baitfish leading the pack. Artificial shrimp have come a long way in the past few years. Fished right, they are just as effective as real shrimp. Jigs, grubs and natural bait all work well under a popping cork. The cork's action adds motion and noise that acts like a dinner bell for reds. When the reds are shallow, which can be high or low tide in the tidal creeks, and your heart is strong, then it is time for topwater. Be aware. Topwater fishing is explosive whether you are throwing flies or plugs. Move out into deep waters and channels where the tide really moves to find bulls. Be sure you upsize your tackle and offerings for these monsters. Hand-sized pinfish and equally large chunks of cut bait will bring the big ones out. Trout are the No. 2 fish, moving to first place during the winter, for Riviera Beach fishing charters. The specks stay in these waters year-round. You'll find the trout on points, deep holes at low tide and hovering around grass patches out in the flats of Laguna Madre. The same popping cork rigs that are so deadly on redfish are equally effective on trout. Trout also fall victim to topwater lures and grub-style baits.

With a mouth literally full of teeth, the sheepshead dines on barnacles, crabs and other mollusks. They concentrate in areas with vertical structures like pilings. They are caught with artificial lures, but fresh bait will catch many more. Cut large shrimp into pieces. Scrape barnacles off structure and hook them through the meaty part. A top bait is the fiddler crab. Fiddlers, named for the giant claw the males have, are easy to catch at low tide. A few minutes on the bank and you'll have enough for day of sheepshead fishing. Black drum are caught almost exclusively on fresh bait. Pieces of shrimp, squid and cut bait fished on the bottom will catch these fish. This biggest of the drum family hangs out in channels and slowly moves along looking for something to eat. Black drum are tasty eating. Because they are not aggressive, they are not targeted as much as reds and trout. The flounder is the ultimate inshore ambush predator. They rest on the bottom, covered with sand, and wait for unsuspecting prey to swim past. Lures like grubs and jigs that bounce on the bottom are top artificial lures. Shrimp, squid, the various minnows and cut bait are excellent choices. Look for sandy patches for this fish. Some Riviera Beach fishing charters go out at night flounder gigging.
