About Fishing in Aransas Pass

Aransas Pass Fishing Charters

Aransas Pass is located northeast of Corpus Christi and southeast of San Antonio on the shore of Redfish Bay. The city limits of Aransas Pass encompass most of Redfish Bay and its islands in Nueces and Aransas Counties. The official city limits of Aransas Pass covers 51.8 square miles, of which 21% is land and 80% is water. If that doesn’t shout “go fishing”, then what does? Aransas Pass is a destination for water sports, fishing, birding, kayaking, hunting and all kinds of outdoor adventures. The city is home to Conn Brown Harbor and the largest hummingbird garden in Texas. The place is park central, featuring public parks with all kinds of activities. That starts with Community Park, complete with recreation and picnic facilities and a nature trail. There is also Conn Brown Harbor Park, spanning 5 acres on the Intracoastal Waterway, Aransas Channel, and Conn Brown Harbor Turning Basin. It has two concrete boat ramps with docks, two T-head fishing piers with lighting, a public restroom, and three cleaning tables. San Patricio County Navigation District Marina, a 10-acre park, is also equipped with two double boat ramps and boat shelters. Newbury Park has a one-of-a-kind hummingbird landscape to attract hummingbirds. It’s also the gateway to some fantastic fishing, both inshore and offshore. The Texas Gulf Coast is known as headquarters for world-class Texas fishing. At Port Aransas, you can choose from bay and offshore fishing, or the jetties provide an ideal location for Aransas pass fishing. Your catch may include such species as trout, redfish, flounder, red snapper, tuna, marlin or shark.

Aransas Pass Inshore Fishing

Inshore fishing around Aransas Pass is centered on three basic areas, the Estes Flats, Lighthouse Lakes and Redfish Bay. They are all part of the same area of water and consist of fertile waters that attract a multitude of food for saltwater fish. And naturally, an abundance of fish follow the bait. Redfish Bay is a small bay system between Aransas Bay and Corpus Christi Bay. Many parts of the bay are very shallow, so if you are new to the area and boating: be cautious. But don’t let the size fool you. This is one of the most famous and popular saltwater fishing areas on the Gulf coast. It’s really a unique area, loaded with speckled trout, redfish and flounder, plus other species as the seasons change. It includes islands, saltwater marshes, channels and shallow flats. The causeway between Aransas Pass and Port Aransas crosses the middle of the area. North of the causeway are the well-known Estes Flats, California Hole and the Lighthouse Lakes paddling trails. South of the causeway are the flats around Stedman Island, Dagger Island and the Brown and Root flats. There are numerous fishing piers and wade fishing areas, such as the Ancel Brundrett, Charlie’s Pasture and Horace Caldwell piers. And good wade fishing areas include the Brown and Root Flats and Port Aransas north and south jetty areas. The growing sport of kayak fishing is noted here as well, as more than a dozen major kayak launch areas are available.

Aransas Pass Offshore Fishing

Offshore trips here target amberjack, cobia, king mackerel, snapper, marlin, dolphin (mahi mahi), tuna, shark, flounder and more. The peak season for offshore trips is the summer, when the fish are more active and school up around structure and baitfish. Bottom fishing is popular to fill up your ice chest. And you don’t have to go for a full day to reach some of those good spots when you have a good guide to show you the way. Trips here range from one-half day up to full days. An exciting part of longer trips is the chance to go trolling for big marlin, dolphin, sailfish, wahoo, and tuna. Those fish are not only great fighters, but make great fish to take home to eat. Make sure you check with your guide before going on your trip to ensure you have what you need to bring and what is supplied, especially on the longer charter trips that go further offshore. Fishing is good all year long here.
